Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing how we live and work It can increase productivity, improve accuracy, enhance decision-making, and enable automation of repetitive tasks.

AI has unlocked endless opportunities. It can process and analyze vast amounts of data at an unprecedented speed. This has become a game-changer in the field of innovation and automation. Embracing AI is a vital step forward in the journey towards a more efficient and intelligent future.

AI has significant benefits such as

  • analyzing vast amounts of data

  • supports decision making

  • research and development

  • creative processes

  • enhance efficiency and productivity

AI Artificial Intelligence has come a long way ...

The concept of Artificial Intelligence was first proposed in the 1950s by computer scientist John McCarthy. He coined the term to describe the ability of machines to mimic human intelligence. However, it was not until the 1960s and 1970s that significant progress was made in the field.

During this period, researchers began to develop algorithms and models that could perform tasks requiring human-like intelligence. Early AI systems focused on rule-based expert systems, which used a set of logical rules to solve problems. These systems showed promise but were limited by their reliance on pre-programmed knowledge.

In the 1980s and 1990s, a new approach called machine learning emerged. Machine learning algorithms allow AI systems to learn from data and improve their performance over time without explicit programming. This breakthrough opened up new possibilities and led to significant advancements in AI.

One of the most notable milestones in AI history came in 1997 when IBM's Deep Blue defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov. This victory showcased the power of AI and its ability to perform complex tasks previously thought to be the domain of human intelligence.

Another significant breakthrough in AI came in 2011, when IBM's Watson won the game show Jeopardy against past champions. Watson demonstrated the ability to understand natural language and access vast amounts of information to answer questions accurately and quickly.

The rapid growth of AI has had a huge impact on society.

We’re all figuring this out

AI has arrived in our homes, our workplaces, and probably a few places we haven’t noticed yet. Some people can’t wait to try every new tool. Others would rather the whole thing slow down for a minute.

I understand both feelings.

I’m a writer, so I’m interested in what AI can do—and in what it does to us. Can it make a difficult task easier? Can we trust the answers it gives? What happens when a machine starts to sound like someone who knows us?

Those questions turn up in my stories. They also shape the simple, practical guides I create for people who want to explore AI without feeling they need a computer science degree first.

AI in my stories

A new technology can be helpful, funny, unsettling, or all three before breakfast. In my fiction, AI gives me a way to ask “what if?” and follow the answer somewhere unexpected.

I Met a Robot explores the relationships people build with technology, and what can happen when a helpful device becomes something more complicated. You don’t have to know anything about AI to read these stories. You just have to be curious about people.

Curious about using AI yourself?

You don’t have to learn everything at once. You can start by asking AI to explain a confusing term, help organize an idea, or give you a starting point for something you want to write. Then you check its work and decide what’s useful.

That’s the approach I take in my beginner-friendly AI resources: plain language, real examples, and room to try things for yourself.

The human part matters

AI can help us get started. It can offer suggestions and save time. It can also get things wrong. Our memories, our judgment, humour, and lived experiences are still ours to bring to the page—and to the decisions we make off it.

I’ll keep writing about both sides: the useful everyday tools and the stories that make us stop and think.
